The series of sculptures began in 2000 with a bronze commission. The original idea was carved in polystyrene and was part of a series depicting abstract figurative forms. The sculpture "King & Queen" is the largest work to date and is in bronze. More recently, Gardner has produced carved figures in wood, using oak, walnut and ebony. More bronze pieces are currently in production. Gardner’s sculpture is influenced by artists Henry Moore, Constantin Brancussi and Isamu Noguchi.
